Glacier - 2000 |

When
i was working for BMW i had to spend some time working in their
car plants in Germany & Austria. During one 2 week stint at
their Steyr diesel engine plant we decided to go to Innsbruck
for the weekend. When we got to Innsbruck on the saturday we found
out that you could get a coach up to a cable car and then up to
the glacier to ski/snowboard. That was it, i HAD
to go. On the way up to the cable car it was raining cats and
dogs but above the snowline it was dumping fresh powder. At the
top of the cable car the clouds had descended into the valley,
leaving blue skies and fresh powder!!!!! |

The board & bindings/boots i hired were rubbish, but i had
a brilliant time!!!! I decided to head off piste. The rope which
marked the piste edge drooped into the snow in the middle, i headed
for this and thought i'd ride over the rope. WRONG!!!!! As i hit
the edge of the piste i sunk into the powder thigh high and the
rope caught me around the ankles. I somersaulted into the fresh
powder field for about 14 feet. It took the best part of half
an hour to get back onto the piste. After that i stuck to the
main piste's but they had that much powder on them it didn't matter.
A few of us snowboarders picked a spot with a nice steep run off
and using our boards as shovels built a mid-sized kicker. It was
sheer bliss getting air for those few hours. A pity the other
guys wanted to look around Innsbruck on the sunday, i'd happily
have spent the day back up there on the glacier! |
